How to install the DIY Camo Car Wrap Kit
Required Tools & Equipment Checklist
Heat Gun - Variable temperature control (hair dryer not recommended)
Felt Squeegee - (included in kit)
Precision Knife - (included in kit)
80/20 IPA Solution - 80% water / 20% Isopropyl Alcohol in spray bottle
Microfiber Towels - Clean, lint-free microfiber or terry cloth
Environment Setup: Work inside a clean, dust-free, shaded garage or shop. Ambient installation temperature should ideally be between 65°F and 78°F (18°C – 25°C). Avoid installing in direct sunlight, wind, or cold outdoor temperatures.
- Difficulty: Moderate (7 out of 10)
- Install Time: 6-8 Hours
-
Tools Needed: Microfiber/Terry Cloth rag, Isopropyl alcohol (IPA), Spray Bottle,Â
Razor Bade (included in kit), Felt Squeegee (included in kit), Heat Gun
Phase 1: Vehicle Preparation & Cleaning
Thorough Wash & Decontamination
- Wash the entire vehicle thoroughly to remove top layer dirt and grime. Ensure vehicle is 100% dry before chemical cleaning.
Isopropyl Alcohol Wipe-Down
- Spray the 80/20 alcohol mixture onto a fresh microfiber towel.
- Thoroughly wipe down every body panel receiving vinyl. Pay extra attention to panel edges, seams, rubber gaskets, door jamb gaps, and wheel arches.
CRITICAL WARNING: Edge Adhesion: Over 90% of vinyl lifting starts at panel edges. If wax, grease, or dust remains in these gaps, the adhesive will fail. Wipe edge gaps twice using clean towel sections.
Phase 2: Design Layout & Planning
Inventory & Set-Aside
- Unroll your camouflage sheets and lay out your printed design guide.
- Set aside exactly 50% of your vinyl sheets for the opposite side of the vehicle. This prevents accidentally using all large focal shapes on one side.
Dry Layout & Temporary Tacking
- Identify primary "anchor" pieces (the largest shapes) on your design guide.
- Peel a shape off the paper backing (touching only extreme corners) and tack it lightly to the panel.
- Step back 5–10 feet to evaluate visual flow across adjacent panels before squeegeeing.
Handling Complex Shapes & Self-Adhesion
- Breaks over body lines: Let shapes bridge naturally over body seams and trim lines—do not force them to end at a gap.
- If vinyl folds and sticks to itself: Do not panic or yank hard! Gently pull the film apart at opposite ends. The pressure-sensitive air-release adhesive will release without damage.
- Repositioning: Lift lightly tacked vinyl by pulling smoothly back at a 180-degree angle close to the paint surface.
MISTAKE WARNING: Difficult Contours: Avoid placing large, solid camouflage pieces directly over deep, complex body recesses (such as fog light pockets or sharp composite curves). Position complex shapes on flatter panels and span simple transitions.
Phase 3: Application & Squeegee Technique
"Glassing" the Film
- Hold the shape taut with both hands using light, even tension.
- Lower it onto the panel until it floats flat over the area without heavy wrinkles (this is called "glassing").
Squeegee Strokes & Air Release
- Hold your felt squeegee at a steady 45-degree angle.
- Work systematically from the center outward toward the edges using firm, overlapping strokes.
- Air escape channels under the film allow trapped air to exit cleanly.
Curved & Recessed Sections
- Convex (Outer Curves): Lightly warm the vinyl with a heat gun to soften it, then stretch gently over the curve and squeegee down.
- Concave (Indented Channels): Never stretch vinyl down into an indentation. Feed and press relaxed vinyl directly into the deepest part of the recess first, then squeegee outward toward flat areas.
PRO TIP: If an accidental wrinkle forms during squeegeeing, stop immediately! Gently lift the vinyl past the wrinkle, let the film relax (apply mild heat if needed), and re-squeegee outwards.
Phase 4: Trimming, Cutting & Edge Tucking
Snap a Fresh Blade
- Snap off a dull segment so you are working with a razor-sharp tip. A dull blade tears film; a fresh tip glides.
Light Scoring Technique
- Score only 50%–70% through the vinyl thickness—never cut through to the paint. Snap the film cleanly along the score line.
- Use the edge of your felt squeegee as a straight-edge fence guide for clean cuts.
- For door jambs and panel gaps, guide the blade down the center of the gap.
Tucking Edges & Gaskets
- Leave 2–3mm of vinyl overhang.
- Use the edge of your squeegee or plastic tucking card to push the overhang cleanly behind rubber gaskets and body trim.
CRITICAL WARNING: Paint Protection: Never press hard on your knife. Excessive pressure will slice into the vehicle's clear coat or paint, leading to rust over time. Practice scoring scrap vinyl on cardboard to master the light-touch technique.

Phase 5: Post-Heating, Inspection & Final Curing
Post-Heating (Setting Vinyl Memory)
- Pass your heat gun slowly over all applied shapes, paying extra attention to stretched areas, edges, and recessed channels.
- Heat the vinyl to approximately 180°F – 200°F (82°C – 93°C) to kill the memory of the vinyl so it never lifts or shrinks back.
Final Inspection & Air Bubble Press
- Inspect all panels. For tiny residual air bubbles, use finger pressure or your felt squeegee to push trapped air out through the channels.
Sun Curing Period
- Park the vehicle in direct sunlight for 24–48 hours after installation. Sun heat fully cures the acrylic adhesive.
- Avoid washing the vehicle for at least 5 days.
